Exploring potential applications of optical lattice clocks in a plate subduction zone

چکیده
Abstract Optical clocks improved the accuracy of state-of-the-art cesium by more than two orders magnitude and enabled frequency comparison with a fractional uncertainty one part in 10 18 . Gravitational redshift such allows determining their height difference an 1 cm. In Europe, chronometric leveling has been extensively conducted for unifying reference systems. Temporal response leveling, which affords monitoring cm variation within hours averaging time, may offer new opportunities to explore seismology volcanology. Superb stability optical lattice will be best used applications. This article outlines prospects Japan. Combining existing observation network GNSS, crustal deformations monitored unprecedented future.

Rotation and plate locking at the southern Cascadia subduction zone
Global Positioning System vectors and surface tilt rates are inverted simultaneously for the rotation of western Oregon and plate locking on the southern Cascadia subduction thrust fault. Plate locking appears to be largely offshore, consistent with earlier studies, and is sufficient to allow occasional great earthquakes inferred from geology. Clockwise rotation of most of Oregon about a nearby...
متن کاملColloquium: Physics of optical lattice clocks
Recently invented and demonstrated optical lattice clocks hold great promise for improving the precision of modern time keeping. These clocks aim at the 10 18 fractional accuracy, which translates into a clock that would neither lose nor gain a fraction of a second over an estimated age of the Universe. In these clocks, millions of atoms are trapped and interrogated simultaneously, dramatically...
متن کاملOptical lattice clocks and frequency comparison
We consider designs of optical lattice clocks in view of the quantum statistics, relevant atomic spins, and atom-lattice interactions. The first two issues lead to two optimal constructions for the clock: a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice loaded with spin-polarized fermions and a 3D optical lattice loaded with bosons. By taking atomic multipolar interactions with the lattice fields into ac...
متن کاملFractal zone plate beam based optical tweezers
We demonstrate optical manipulation with an optical beam generated by a fractral zone plate (FZP). The experimental results show that the FZP beam can simultaneously trap multiple particles positioned in different focal planes of the FZP beam, owing to the multiple foci and self-reconstruction property of the FZP beam. The FZP beam can also be used to construct three-dimensional optical tweezer...
متن کاملSubduction zone rheology
Rheological flow laws can be obtained from studies using multi-anvil high-pressure systems with synchrotron-based piezometers and strain metrics. The high flux X-ray source provides minute-scale time resolution with accurate measurement of diffraction patterns and direct sample images. Measurements of length changes with an accuracy of one part in 104 are being developed and will provide a new ...
